The Spotlights in Enugu Rural Area

One is said to travel in order to regulate imagination by reality and, instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which involves the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business purposes. People are known as visitors because they may either be tourists or excursionists; residents or non residents.


Enugu state is endowed with a lot of tourist resources, facilities and potentials. These exist in natural features such as lake, waterfalls, caves, hills, and cultural festivals. Also there are man-made features like hotels, telecommunication and transport outfits, galleries and monumental or archaeological collection. Some of these potentials are developed while others are yearning for development, some of the existing tourist events in Enugu include the Mmanwu festival and the New yam festival (Iriji).

Moreover, in primordial times, masquerades were principally used as law enforcement agents because of the general believe that they were spiritual elements. They were effective in ensuring compliance with traditional norms and values and in setting moral code in the communities.

Masquerade institution is very important in Enugu state and its annual festival which comes up in November every year has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in the State. The festival usually attracts tourist in large number in Enugu, that's why the government is trying to elevate it to an international tourist event.

Additionally, New yam festival is another major tourist event in the city. Yam is an important good crop in Enugu state and as a result, it has cultural significance. The new yam festival is the occasion celebrated by the people between the months of August and October, though the time for the celebration varies from one community to the other.

The new yam festival is an occasion to offer special prayers to God for a fertile land and good harvest. It is marked with feasting and merrymaking, other cultural activities also keeps the state alive; chieftaincy coronation ceremonies. Ozo title taking ceremonies, traditional marriage ceremonies and cultural troupes.

Needles to say, are other underdeveloped tourist sites.Eziagu tourist complex is located at the South Central part of the state. It is made up of a waterfall, a three kilometer cave, natural spring and a lake.

Also is the Amagunze lake complex which consists of nine lakes within the same district. Opi lake complex is another aesthetic environment that is made up of eight natural lakes within the community. The site is beautiful by the surrounding-wooded environment and the breathtaking landscape. The place is best suited for the construction of holiday resorts. 

The Ugwueme and Udi hills are hills that its area are hundreds of metres above sea level. These hills are wonderful for mountaineering or mountain climbing and scape admiration points. Beneath the Udi hills are coal mines, beautiful tunnels that are true tourist sites. Following this is the Silicon hills .

It is located near Nkalagu campus of the Enugu state University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and it has very important mineral deposit called "Silicon".The hill is more than 300m above sea level and almost half a kilometer long, it has strong 'Silica' an important raw material for the manufacture of glasses. Its surrounding environment is very captivating with hills, valley and plains beautifully wrapped up such that one cannot ignore its breathtaking view and inspiring blend.

Another prominent tourist site is the Ani Ozalla lake and shrine. It is a natural lake located at Ozalla in Nkanu West LGA where crocodiles which are regarded as goddesses appear from the lake at the command of the chief priest to take offerings from supplicants. In addition, there also lies the Iheneke !ake. Located in Ezeagu local government of Enugu state.

It is a tropical lake with the maximum density during the warmest season. During the rainy season, the lake cools and cools further as harmattan advances . It is a lovely place to rest and have relaxation.

Awhum water fall is situated at Amaugwe village of Awhum town in Udi local government area. The waterfall is as a result of massive out crop of granite rock with water ascending over the top forming a stream. A section of the fall is warm through the season. The fall is 30metres high and located close to Awhum Monastery. The water is said to be curative and capable of dispelling evil or satanic forces wherever it is sprinkled.

By and large, tourism is a travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family or  business purposes, usually for a limited duration. While tourists are people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for more than one consecutive year. Enugu is one of those places. Thus a home away from home.
